The Devons

The Devon is considered the oldest breed of cattle in existence today. In 1623 the first Devons arrived in the United States from Devonshire, England. The colonists utilized them for oxen, beef and milk, making them triple purpose. The same can be said of them today.

They are red in colour which varies in shade from a rich deep red to a light red or chestnut. Hence, their nickname the “Ruby Reds.” Their docile temperaments make for easy handling and calmer cows when calving.

Devons are excellent “walkers” which make for superior grazers and their ability to utilize grass and other forages is remarkable. This has heightened their popularity in other areas like South America, New Zealand and Australia where grass feeding is the norm.

We are one of the only “Milking Devon” and “Beef Devon” breeding operations in Virginia. The purebred genetics are the key to the superior taste and tenderness.

The cattle are raised on pasture from birth to finish and everything in between. They never receive hormones or unnecessary antibiotics nor do the pastures get pesticides or herbicides.

The calves are never separated from their mothers, natural weaning is paramount! We feel strongly that it makes for healthier, happier animals.
